If you don't mind getting a bit messy, then this is a unique excursion that you might enjoy! A small bus will pick you up at your hotel in Cartagena around 8am and take you about 45 minutes north of the city.
When you arrive, you can safely leave your bags on the bus - you won't want to bring anything with you because it will definitely get covered in mud! Trusted locals will gladly receive your camera and take pictures for you while you're mud bathing (and they are quite good at remember whose camera belongs to who).*

When you get in the mud, it's quite a strange feeling as you're never quite sure how deep the mud goes. It seems that just before your shoulders will go under, the mud creates enough resistance and keeps you afloat. It's surprisingly difficult to move around in the mud, as you don't have have traction on anything, but it's quite fun to try to make your way from one side to the other.

The maximum time you can spend in the mud is 45 minutes, but whenever you're ready you can climb out. Be prepared to wipe off a layer of smooth mud that may be as much as one inch thick! After you go down the staircase, you head to the bay area where you can rinse off the mud and get (most of the way) clean again. It's a good idea to let the mud dry before you rinse it off if you want to have the full body mud peel effect.

The locals who take the pictures will give your camera back once you're rinsed and clean, and you can take a minute to dry before you hop on the bus and head to a remote beach for lunch. You can choose if you want chicken, fish, or a vegetarian lunch. The traditional dish from the region is fried mojarra, a fish from the tilapia family, with coconut rice and a lettuce and tomato salad, so we recommend you try that one!

After lunch, you can either hop back on the bus and head to Cartagena, where the bus will leave you at your hotel, or you can go on a second excursion through mangrove trees in a canoe.
