Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow in salt water usually in the tropics or subtropics, and a forest of mangrove trees is referred to as a mangal.
Mangals sometimes seem otherworldly, as the white mangrove branches sprout out of the shallow salt water. The mangals here are are delightfully tranquil, with no background noise except for the occasionally flapping of birds wings or splashing of tiny fish. The little fish seem playful as they splatter in and out of the water, in fact, some of them jump high enough to land in the canoe!
In the middle of the journey you'll stop at an island that has been turned into an indigenous museum. As you walk around the island, there are exhibits from different indigenous tribes throughout different time periods and regions of Colombia. The exhibits are in chronological order and the guide explains the implications of the statues and sculptures as you go from one exhibit to the next. It's interesting to note, for example, within the art work whether men or women were heads of tribes. Most of the pieces are replicas, but there are a few originals and the history of all the different tribes is enlightening.
When you get back to your 4-person canoe, the buga takes you to a village, where a small bus is waiting for you when you disembark. From there, the bus takes you directly to your hotel.
This activity can easily be combined with bathing in nutrient-rich mud at the Totumo Volcano to create a full day excursion.
